“I just want to tell you guys that acne is ok. No one is perfect, my skin is not always clear. Do not make fun of someone’s skin because it’s not yours,” reads one of high school senior Wilson Ling’s Instagram posts. At first glance it’s hard to believe that Ling’s now nearly perfect complexion was once red, rough, and bumpy. But if you spend just five minutes combing his page–which is the perfect mixture of glam, humor, wise-beyond-his-years insight on self-confidence, and the importance of the golden rule– a very real and raw personal skincare journey is revealed.
Ling’s acne surfaced at the beginning of 2016 and through the discovery of a dedicated skincare regimen — including our #1 best selling Alpha Beta Daily Peels ($88) — his skin and self-confidence transformed. Naturally, we reached out in the hopes he would be willing to share his story, and lucky for us he obliged. Read on for our interview with the IG sensation who radiates authenticity and encourages followers to always be kind to both one another and themselves.
Please tell us about your skincare journey!
I’ve never had a big problem with acne until the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016 – I had a massive acne outbreak on the right side of my face. Before 2016 I did not pay attention to my skin or do skincare, all I did was slap on some moisturizer.
How did you discover Dr. Dennis Gross products? Is there a specific product of ours that you attribute to your incredible skin transformation?
After most of my acne was gone, I was left with a ton of dark scars. I tried everything I could find in the drugstore but nothing worked for me. One day I went into Sephora and looked at their skincare section and saw the Alpha Beta Daily Peels that claim to even out skin tone and texture. And after using the 35 treatments, I saw amazing results and decided to order another one.
What was the length of time between your remarkable before and after shots?
The before shot was taken in the beginning of 2016 and the after shot was taken in September of 2018.
How long did it take for you to see a significant change in your skin using our products?
I saw significant change after about 30 Alpha Beta Daily Peel treatments – they got rid of about 70% of the dark scars I had as well as uneven forehead texture. After another 30 treatments my skin was basically clear of scars.
How did this make you feel?
This made me feel incredibly happy and definitely boosted my self-confidence. I always tell my followers that acne is not something you should be ashamed of because that was one mistake I made and it took a lot of time and effort to build my self confidence up again.
In your opinion, what is the best way to handle oily/acne-prone skin?
The best way to handle oily/acne-prone skin is to definitely cleanse and moisturize. Cleansing is very important because oils can cause your pores to clog and therefore cause breakouts. Moisturizing is one of the most important things and should be in everyone’s routine. There is a misleading concept that people with oily skin do not need to moisturize because of all the oil their skin produces. That is completely not true, the reason why your skin is producing so much oil is because it is lacking moisture. So I recommend finding a moisturizer that is good for oily skin like the Dr. Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine Moisture Cushion ($60), one of my favorite moisturizers!
How does your skin fluctuate between the seasons (e.g. summer and fall), and how do you prep skin for these temperature changes?
I have combination skin: oily in the T-zone and normal everywhere else. That holds true for all seasons except for winter; during the winter my T-zone stays oily and the rest of my face is usually dry. Despite the changes, I still use the same skincare routine. However, I do use Aloe Vera a lot more during the winter.
What is your current AM/PM regimen? Please walk us through it!
My AM/PM skincare is basically the same except for a few steps.
- For AM, I cleanse my face with an exfoliating cleanser to get rid of dead skin. Then I apply a few drops of the Dr. Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine Hydration Booster ($68) all over my skin. And then I use a moisturizer.
- For PM, it is a lot more complicated because it depends on the type of day. I cleanse my face with a gentle cleanser, [exfoliate if I feel like I need it], I apply some essence and tap it in, then I go in with DDG Hyaluronic Marine Hydration Booster drops (just like my AM routine). After, I either do a mask or I moisturize.
When I have scars from a breakout I reach for the Alpha Beta Daily Peels right after washing my face and drying with a towel then continue with the rest of my routine.
And finally, what is some of the greatest skincare advice you’ve ever received?
Some of the best skincare advice I’ve ever received would be to exfoliate twice a week – it is important to get rid of your dead skin cells. This allows your makeup and skin to look a lot better! Another piece of advice would be to not use mud/clay masks everyday, as they can dry out your skin and make your acne worse! One last piece of advice is to not touch your skin, a lot of germs can transfer from your hands to your face when you make contact, so it is best to avoid!
