Hello Summer! Our favorite time of year is in full force! Although it’s time to hang poolside and head to the beach, many are coping with a distressing dilemma–bacne. Most commonly caused by clogged pores this skin concern blossoms in the summer months more than any other time of year. Don’t put your favorite bathing suit away just yet. We’ll help you defeat the mighty battle with bacne.
Let’s start with the cause. Wondering why your breakouts have been worse in the summer? Two words: increased oil. Between the sun exposure and surge in heat, sebaceous activity is inevitable. Dead skin collects on the surface of the skin, oil gets trapped, the blocked bacteria overgrows and voila–bacne.
It’s also important to note the skin on the body is thicker with more oil glands, so acne is deeper and more difficult to treat. Both hormones and stress can aggravate and cause body acne. If you wear very oily hair products, this could possibly contribute to backne, as the oil can transfer from the hair to the pores on the back. It is always a good idea to shower right after the gym as bacteria can develop from sweat and trap dirt and oil into the glands.
Now, let’s talk about how to regain control: daily prevention. Products that purge the pores of oils and normalize the oils chemistry are essential, such as our Acne Eliminating Pads. These are meant to work on all forms of acne and provides deep penetration – excellent for both prevention and treating active breakouts. Keep an eye out for products with salicylic acid and witch hazel extract to reduce pores, glycolic and lactic acid to exfoliate, and willow bark extract to improve skin’s clarity. Like our holy grail: Alpha Beta Daily Peels! Exfoliation is important and so is cleansing with a body scrubber. Antibacterial soaps can also help.
UV rays in sunlight can cause acne scars to darken, and can even slow down the healing process–so lather up in your favorite SPF! And not just at the beach. Remember to apply while rocking those sundresses and off the shoulder tops this season.
Although bacne can be stressful (and sometimes embarrassing) to deal with in the summer, you can take good measures to prevent it. Summer’s all about spending time outside and relaxing, so don’t let it keep you from enjoying it.
