Sunspots, age spots, brown spots, freckles. Dark spots can go by many different names.
They are all actually little growths caused by collective sun exposure. These round sunspots are darker that the rest of our faces because they are filled with excess melanin pigment, our skin’s defensive reaction to the sun.
Since brown spots are created by the sun – think of it as your skin talking to you, and telling you that it has had too much exposure. This means that your sunscreen is inadequate and you must either re-apply more often or increase your level of SPF.
Here are 3 simple yet significant steps to take when protecting against and reversing the damage of this dreaded skin discoloration.
- Embrace a love for Vitamin C. It is a potent antioxidant with powerful skin lightening properties that protects against UVA damage and free radicals. It can also help to even skin tone and combat hyperpigmentation. It’s our doc’s fave ingredient of all time!
- Wear sunscreen every single day. An obvious tip yet so many of us don’t do it! From winter to summer, wear a broad-spectrum sunblock with at least an SPF 15 and you won’t see existing dark spots get any darker.
- Lather skin in Ferulic Acid. The best ingredient for sun damage protection; it’s a plant-based antioxidant that enhances properties of other ingredients like retinol.
Listen to your skin. Take these skincare tips and in time those dark spot days should just fade away.
