8 Cleansing Commandments: It’s Our Doctors Orders

When your faced with the daily tasks of a busy day, even simple tasks like cleansing your face can be overlooked.

Believe it or not, just one night without a proper cleanse is a first class ticket to a breakout in the next month. The first and most essential step to your skincare regimen is beyond the ‘wash, rinse, repeat approach. The road to flawless skin–and elimination of fine lines, enlarged pores, and clogged skin– just got eight steps easier.  Here we’ve listed the ideal commandments for a clearer, healthier complexion.

#1 :Thou shall maintain balance.

This is the most influential element. If your skin is maintained properly, its natural healing powers will be maximized, and it will stay in better condition for a longer period of time.

#2: Thou shall know the skin you’re in.

You must take the time to understand your skin.  Whether your main concern is dryness, sensitivity, or loss of firmness recognition is the first step to facing it head on. Over-cleansing, under-cleansing, and not choosing the right cleanser for you puts you at risk of throwing the skin off-balance–and that’s the worst thing you can do to your skin.

#3 : Though shall pursue beneficial ingredients.

The key aspect to look for is a cleanser that contains the right ingredients, like antioxidants to protect against free radicals, salicylic acid to help clear your pores, or witch hazel to act as a natural astringent.  If the ingredients are there, the quality will be there, too.

#4: Thou shall apply effectively and efficiently.

Deep cleansing the pores becomes easier and more efficient in the shower. Apply your cleanser to dry skin with dry hands when you first get in the shower–that causes it t0 bind more effectively to the dirt and oil molecules. Then, massage it in and rinse with lukewarm water.

#5: Though shall use an ample amount.

If you are using the right cleanser–and the right amount–you shouldn’t feel the need to skip a cleanse. At night, anywhere from a quarter sized-amount or larger is adequate. In the morning, a dime-sized amount.

#6: Thou shall remove your makeup religiously.

Those makeup removal wipes are not enough. Break the habit of not removing your makeup before bed–sooner rather than later. Leaving makeup on enlarges pores, generates free radicals, and accelerates collagen breakdown.

#7 : Thou shall remember the vital areas.

Many people miss their temples, bridge of their nose, hairline, and jawline. It’s important to cleanse your whole face so unplanned breakouts won’t occur.

#8 : Thou shall know the signs of clean, balanced skin.

The natural state of your skin is to not feel it at all–and the texture of your cleanser should be different than your skin. If your skin feels tight, that’s a sign that you either over-washed  or it’s time for a cleanser switch.
